Ear Discharge

Home/Ear Discharge

Ear discharge refers to fluid coming from the ear canal. While it is often earwax, it can sometimes result from infections or trauma. Therefore, it should not be ignored.

The characteristics of the discharge—such as its consistency, odor, duration, onset speed, and accompanying symptoms—are crucial in diagnosing the condition.

Causes of Ear Discharge

The primary causes of ear discharge include:

Water entering the external auditory canal; Infection; Sudden changes in pressure; Inflammation; Allergies; Eardrum rupture; Swimmer’s ear; Otitis externa; Otitis media; Cholesteatoma; Eardrum cancer; Mastoiditis.

When to Consult a Doctor About Ear Discharge

You should seek medical attention if ear discharge is accompanied by any of the following:

A yellowish or bloody appearance; A foul odor; Swelling or warmth in the ear; Occurrence following a head injury; Persistence for more than five days; Severe pain; Accompanying symptoms such as headache, fever, or hearing loss; The presence of discharge and fever in individuals with immune deficiencies; Facial nerve involvement.

Treatment of Ear Discharge

Treatment for ear discharge depends on the underlying cause. Accurate diagnosis is essential to determine the appropriate approach. For infections, antibiotics and ear drops are often effective. If the eardrum is torn, treatments addressing the specific cause, such as repairing the tear, can lead to positive outcomes.
